How to Choose a Wood Chipper Model

A six-point engineering checklist for comparing machines with fewer surprises after delivery.

Start with the material—not the catalogue

Two projects asking for the same hourly tonnage may need different machines. Uniform plantation logs, tangled branches, roots and construction timber load the feeding and cutting systems differently.

Record wood species, moisture, typical and maximum diameter, length distribution and contaminants. A short feeding video often provides more useful evidence than a material name alone.

Define sustained capacity

Specify the average production required over a shift, not only an instantaneous peak. Include loader cycle time, knife inspection, screen cleaning, refuelling and downstream stops. Capacity claims should always be tied to a defined feed material and finished size.

Confirm chip use and size

Boiler fuel, panel furnish, compost bulking material and hammer-mill feed have different acceptable size distributions. If oversize must be removed, include a screen and return path in the line design.

Compare complete configurations

Feeding

Opening dimensions, hydraulic feed control and loader access must suit irregular material without unsafe manual handling.

Cutting system

Rotor design, knives, counter-knives and screen arrangement affect product distribution, energy use and maintenance.

Discharge

Conveyor height, folding method and stockpile position should match the receiving truck, screen or next process.

Choose mobility last

After confirming process needs, decide whether tracked, towable or stationary installation best fits the site. A tracked model adds job-site mobility on soft or uneven ground. A towable model is practical where access roads and a suitable towing vehicle are available. A stationary electric system is often best for a fixed, continuously fed plant.
