Wood Chipper Capacity Guide

Translate a headline TPH rating into a realistic shift-production target.

Nominal output is a reference point

A capacity range only becomes meaningful when feed material and test conditions are stated. Wood species, bulk density, moisture, diameter distribution and target chip size can change the tonnes produced per hour.

For planning, separate instantaneous cutting rate from sustained line output. The latter includes loading interruptions, material sorting, knife checks, refuelling, screen cleaning and downstream stops.

Factors that move the result

Material geometry

Straight, uniform logs usually feed more consistently than mixed branches, roots or slabs with large voids.

Moisture and species

Mass, toughness and cutting behavior vary. Report wet-basis moisture and identify the main wood species.

Target chip size

A tighter product specification can reduce throughput or require screening and recirculation.

Loading system

Loader size, operator rhythm and feed-deck arrangement affect how continuously the cutting system is supplied.

Knife condition

Knife wear and adjustment influence cutting quality, energy use and the frequency of service stops.

Line bottlenecks

Conveyors, screens, magnets and storage must accept the planned flow without repeated shutdowns.

Build a defensible capacity requirement

  1. State required tonnes per shift and scheduled hours.
  2. Set a realistic utilization allowance for the site.
  3. Describe typical and worst-case feed material separately.
  4. Confirm chip-size acceptance and oversize handling.
  5. Check every conveyor and downstream unit against the same basis.

For projects up to 40 TPH, review the available wood chipper models. If the chips feed a complete processing system, evaluate the wood chip production line as one balanced process.
